Chest binding
compression shirts

For gender-affirming expression.

Your chest. Your comfort. Your choice. For trans, nonbinary and gender-diverse people exploring chest binding, Esteem Apparel offers compression shirts designed to smooth and flatten the appearance of the chest beneath clothing.

Explore a full-length compression layer that may help you create a silhouette that feels more like you. The amount of flattening varies with your body, garment and fit.

Start with an informed choice. Esteem shirts are compression apparel for shaping under clothing. We do not claim clinical validation for gender-affirming chest binding or equivalence to a purpose-built chest binder. Read the fit and binding guidance below before choosing.

A layer that fits your expression

Chest compression, on your terms.

Chest binding means compressing chest tissue to create a flatter-looking chest. Some trans men, transmasculine and nonbinary people choose binding as part of gender affirmation. Others want less chest definition for everyday dressing, performance or personal expression.

You do not need a particular identity or diagnosis to explore compression clothing. Binding is a personal choice, and choosing not to bind is equally valid.

Where Esteem can fit

Esteem compression undershirts apply compression across the chest and torso to change how clothing sits over the body while the garment is worn. They may be an option for people comparing a chest compression tank with a traditional chest binder.

Compression shirts and binders differ in construction, fit and effect. A smoother silhouette is not a promise of a completely flat chest or suitability for every body.

Compare the compression feel

Choose a shirt for your body and goals.

If you are searching for a chest binder alternative or a gender-affirming compression top, compare the garment itself: compression feel, coverage, measurements and the appearance you want under clothing. The tightest option is not automatically the right one.

Original

Our very tight compression undershirt, with firm chest and torso shaping. Consider it if reducing the visible chest profile is your main clothing goal, and review its fit carefully.

01 / MEASURE

Use your measurements.

Check the size guide for the style you want. Do not choose a smaller size to increase binding or flattening. If you are between sizes or unsure about chest and torso fit, ask us before ordering.

02 / CHECK

Listen to your body.

You should be able to breathe freely and move comfortably. Pain, restricted breathing, numbness or skin injury are reasons to remove the garment, not signs that it is working better.

Read binding precautions
03 / LAYER

Try your usual clothes.

Check the neckline, arm openings and hem under the clothing you plan to wear. Different bodies and fabrics produce different results; no garment can guarantee a particular chest shape.

Binding guidance & wellbeing

Your comfort matters more than a flatter look.

Chest compression can affect breathing, skin and muscles. If you are new to binding, have a health condition or are unsure whether a garment suits your needs, speak with a qualified, trans-affirming healthcare professional.

  • Choose the correct size. Never size down or add a second binder to intensify compression.
  • Take breaks. General guidance recommends keeping binding under eight hours a day. This is an upper limit, not a target or a guarantee that any duration is safe for you.
  • Remove compression before sleep. Avoid binding during vigorous exercise.
  • Stop if symptoms appear. Remove the garment for pain, breathing difficulty, ongoing tingling or numbness, or skin irritation. Seek medical advice for persistent symptoms; get urgent help for severe or ongoing breathing difficulty.
  • After chest surgery, follow your surgical team’s instructions. Do not substitute an Esteem shirt for a prescribed recovery garment without their approval.

Questions about chest binding clothing

Compression shirts & chest binders: your questions.

Can a compression shirt be used for chest binding?

A compression shirt may reduce the visible chest profile under clothing, which can be useful for people exploring gender-affirming chest compression. Trans Care BC lists compression shirts among alternatives to chest binders. The effect and suitability depend on the garment and your body. We do not claim clinical validation for binding, so do not assume the fit or effect is the same as a purpose-built binder.

Is Esteem an FTM chest binder or a chest binder alternative?

If you are searching for an FTM chest binder or a transmasculine binding top, Esteem is a compression-shirt option to compare with purpose-built chest binders. Original provides our firmest chest shaping, while Max and EliteSlim offer different compression feels. Choose by construction, coverage and fit; we do not claim equivalent flattening or safety to a particular binder.

Can trans and nonbinary people wear Esteem compression shirts?

Yes. Our clothing is available to people of any gender. Some product names and packaging use men’s shapewear terminology, but that wording does not define who can shop with us. Use the product’s measurements and fit guidance, and seek individual clinical advice when needed.

Will a compression tank make my chest completely flat?

No particular result is guaranteed. Chest size and shape, tissue, garment construction and outer clothing all affect the appearance. Compression changes the silhouette while the shirt is worn; it does not permanently remove or reduce chest tissue.

Should I buy a smaller shirt for stronger binding?

No. Use the size chart for the style you choose. Sizing down or stacking compression garments can increase restriction. Contact us for product sizing help, and a qualified healthcare professional for advice about binding and your health.

Where can I buy Esteem chest compression shirts?

Shop the linked Esteem product pages online, or ask Inclusive Care Clinic Pharmacy in Chubbuck, Idaho about its current in-store selection. Stock, sizes and colours can change, so contact the pharmacy before visiting.
